If you are unhappy with one or more facets of your face’s structure, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon can alter it using implants. The implants are especially popular for augmenting chins, jaws and cheeks, as well as other facial contours a patient deems undesirable.
When you need or desire surgery on your face, head, neck, jaws, or the soft tissues of the oral and maxillofacial region, you want a thoughtful and detailed provider. You choose one who will make you feel at ease, listen to any of your concerns, offer excellent service and work with you throughout your treatment plan. [Bellevue Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery is proud to possess all of those qualities, as well as up-to-the-minute technology and knowledge.
Facial implants are made of natural or synthetic solid materials; both types are biologically compatible with human tissues. The exact type and size of facial implants depend on their intended location, the patient’s goals and the plastic surgeon’s decision.
Chin implants: They bolster the size and protuberance of a chin that’s out of proportion with the rest of the face. Small or recessed chins, also termed weak chins, blend into the neck instead of standing out. They are placed via an incision in the mouth or just beneath the chin.
Jaw implants: They’re used to boost the width of the lower third area of a face. As with a weak chin, a weak jaw hasn’t much definition and blends into the neck. Some people have both weak chins and weak necks. Implants are typically put in place using an incision along the interior jawline at the fold where the cheek and gums converge. Absorbable or traditional stitches close the incision.
Cheek implants: They give bulk to flat or recessed checks, and are usually put in place via incisions in the mouth.
The best candidates for facial implants are people with fully mature skulls; this development usually happens in people when they have reached their late adolescence. People younger than that have yet to reach their physical maturity.
