Many children and dogs are attracted to each other because of their innate playfulness and sense of curiosity. Unfortunately, however, kids’ interactions with dogs can also become dangerous. Dog-inflicted wounds include nips, deep punctures and scrapes, any of which could rip skin, tear muscles, slash nerves, damage eyes and shred subcutaneous tissues. An oral and maxillofacial surgeon treats injuries and other maladies of the mouth, teeth, jaws, neck and face.
If your child is ever in need of an oral surgeon, we at the office of Bellevue Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery are dedicated to providing him or her child with the topmost level of expert and empathetic care. From the front desk to the medical doctors, our team will work closely with you to ensure your child’s wellbeing and recovery. You can be sure that your son or daughter will be in excellent medical hands. We are experts at making children feel comfortable and secure during their visits.
Even when there’s adult supervision and the child and animal know each other, it’s not recommended that kids be at eye level with each other. The most common areas of bite injuries involve the nose, lips, and inner and outer cheeks. When children are on the floor with a dog, some breeds have a predisposition to bite the kids’ faces or mouths, thinking of the youngsters as threats or simply playmates.
Parents must point out to children when they are interacting with dogs in a way in which the dogs might consider aggressive. This is especially true when a child holds his or her face, head or neck close to a dog. Moms and dads need to keep a watch even when their kids are interacting with canine companions who are their house pets. Potentially risky behavior such as interfering with food, hugging, kissing, staring or roughhousing should be discouraged.
